Depending on the shop, you as a customer have numerous payment methods available for an online purchase, which we have briefly listed here:

Each of these methods has its own merits and demerits, although it's the purchase on account that Germans generally opt for. Almost 40 percent of all online payments are made in this way. A purchase on account is not only consumer-friendly and very secure, but also offers you the great advantage that you as a customer only have to pay for the goods when you have already received them.

Although the purchase on account is one of the simplest payment options, there are always uncertainties during the purchase process. In this guide, we want to take away these doubts and answer the most important questions on the subject.

How does the purchase on account work and what advantages does it offer?

There are many reasons why purchase on account is so popular in online shopping, but the most important is surely that it is one of the safest payment methods that you as a customer currently have at your disposal. As a buyer, you only have to pay once you have received the goods. Fraud by the dealer is therefore almost completely impossible. Almost all online shops offer purchase on account as an option.

The process is simple and quickly explained: Once you have selected the desired product or products in the relevant online shop and placed them in the shopping cart, go to the checkout. There you can select "purchase on account" or "purchase on account" as the payment method. In the next step, enter your first and last name for later delivery and payment. The goods will then be sent to the billing address you specified and, depending on the shipping method, will reach the customer after a few days.

Kauf auf Rechnung – einfach auf Rechnung bestellen und später bezahlen

The term of payment when purchasing on account

You normally have 14 days to pay the bill. This is another major advantage of purchasing on account: you still have a certain amount of time after the purchase before you actually have to pay for the item. This can be an advantage, especially in the event of financial bottlenecks. The corresponding payment slip can be found in the delivery package. Once you have paid the bill, the payment process has been successfully completed. Pretty easy, right? By the way, buying on account has one key advantage over the option of paying in advance: You don’t have to make any payments in advance and can therefore try out the product before you even make a payment.

But the payment method also has other advantages, which we have summarized clearly here. For the retailer, buying on account is another method of generating business revenue, but it harbors a great potential for risk, especially with regard to possible non-payment. This is also the main reason why some online shops do without this payment method.

    Benefits for the customer

    Disadvantages for the dealer

There are no disadvantages for the customer as long as he transfers the invoice on time Exception: A payment pause is chosen for the purchase on account - this is often quite expensive.

The credit check and other requirements when purchasing on account

Let us now come to the requirements that are set partly by the legislator and partly by the provider in order to process a purchase on account. This often includes a so-called credit check with a query at the Schufa. Such a check gives your potential business partner access to the so-called Schufa score, which is determined from a range of data. From this, the business partner draws conclusions about your payment behavior. What the Schufa is exactly and where a purchase on account without a credit check is possible is explained in the next paragraph.

At this point we would like to introduce you to the other requirements that exist in addition to a credit check. These include the following:

    precondition Explanation
age The legislator stipulates that every buyer who uses this payment method must be at least 18 years old and therefore have full legal capacity.
credit check The credit check mentioned above must be positive, regardless of whether it is carried out by Schufa as an external or internal credit check. Some mail order companies prefer an internal credit check.
Billing address The billing address must not differ from the delivery address.
Delivery to packing station Delivery to a packing station is not possible when purchasing on account, only when paying in advance.
residence You need a permanent place of residence in Germany and, if necessary, you must be able to prove this by means of a certificate.

Purchase on account without Schufa – which providers do this?

While some online shops prefer to rely on an internal credit check when purchasing on account, the majority use external credit agencies such as Schufa to obtain information. Before we go into the guide with which providers you can buy on account without a Schufa query, we first want to clear up a few myths about Schufa. We will explain what this credit agency is for and how the notorious Schufa score is determined in the first place.

The Schufa (protection association for general credit security) is the largest credit agency in Germany, based in Wiesbaden, Hesse, and has existed since 1927. The Schufa currently has data on almost 67 million natural persons and over 5 million companies in the Federal Republic. Contrary to what many people think, the Schufa is not an authority, but has always been managed under private law. Even if you have always made all payments on time, you are probably in the Schufa. According to your own information, almost 90 percent of all entries in the Schufa are positive and help you with lending or even buying on account.

In principle, the Schufa score is a forecast of the future payment behavior of a customer based on the past. The data that Schufa has about you is fundamental for the calculation. In addition to general things such as name, address and date of birth, this also includes specific financial data such as the opening of current accounts, credit card contracts, current and completed installment loans, mobile phone contracts and much more. All stored data can be viewed by you at any time. Based on all positive and negative entries, there is a Schufa score in the range of 0-100, with 100% credit security only existing on paper. The exact calculation of the Schufa score is not known.

It is important to note that the score is not given for each individual person. Instead, each of you is assigned to a comparison group, for which the value is then determined uniformly. But what a single Schufa score means, we can tell you unequivocally. Because the Schufa has published the following numbers itself:

Provider for purchase on account without Schufa

The best-known and most important provider from whom you can order on account without a Schufa query is certainly the Internet giant Amazon. Negative entries in your Schufa do not play a role there. However, in other online shops it is also possible to purchase on account without an external credit check from the Schufa - internal checks are, however, still possible in some cases. These include, among others:

Order on account with Klarna: That's how it works!

In addition to the US giant PayPal, the Swedish service provider Klarna is probably the best-known independent payment provider. If the online shop you are ordering from offers a cooperation with Klarna, you can order with Klarna on account in a similar way to PayPal. While you as a customer can first inspect the product before you pay, the retailer also benefits from the cooperation, as he protects himself against non-payment. But how can you use Klarna in detail?

Well, first of all you need to open a personal account with Klarna. To do this, go to the website www.klarna.com and register with your email address. You will receive a confirmation code and can then access your account. As with PayPal, you then have to connect a bank account to the Klarna account and need your IBAN and telephone number for this. Note: The confirmation of your account with Klarna can take up to 8 weeks.

Important tip: Every time you log in with Klarna, you will be sent an email with a link. So never use a fake e-mail and preferably one that you can access from your smartphone. Because the Klarna app for iOS and Android is definitely worth the download!

With Klarna you can now make purchases on account in addition to immediate payments and installment purchases. Klarna transfers the money immediately to the online shop where you made your purchase, while you have 14 days to pay the money back to Klarna. In the one-click settings you can specify that the amount is debited directly or you decide to transfer the amount yourself. It is pleasant that the Klarna portal reminds you in good time of the payment due after 14 days. In this way you avoid missing the appointment and falling into the "dunning trap".

A major advantage of Klarna is the payment service provider's customer service. In a 24/7 live chat you can always communicate with an employee who will help you with any difficulty. Of course, you can still contact us by phone to solve individual problems.

This is how the purchase on account with PayPal works

The US giant PayPal is extremely popular in Germany and has almost 20 million customers in the Federal Republic alone. One of the biggest advantages you get when you purchase on account with PayPal is PayPal buyer protection. This ensures that PayPal refunds you the full purchase amount if the package you ordered does not arrive at your home. This also applies to the return shipping costs if the online retailer has not already paid for them.

However, the same applies to PayPal: without a credit check, you cannot have your own account. However, if you are approved for PayPal purchase on account, you will benefit from a wide network of online shops that allow you to pay via PayPal. However, this does not include the other US giant Amazon, where you have to order “classically” on account.

Using PayPal is very simple: you log on to the website and link the PayPal account to your checking account. Then you only have to enter a password and you can start right away. As with Klarna, PayPal pays directly to the online merchant and you have up to 14 days to pay the money to PayPal. It is up to you whether this works via a transfer, a debit from the account or via the credit card.

At this point we would like to show you the most important advantages and disadvantages of purchasing on account with PayPal:

Billpay and other providers for online purchase on account

In addition to the already mentioned and probably best-known payment providers PayPal and Klarna, there are a large number of other providers where you can pay on account.

One of the better-known providers is the e-payment company Billpay, which is widespread in Germany, Switzerland and the Benelux countries. With almost 5,000 cooperating online retailers, Billpay is one of the largest payment providers in the German-speaking region. Anyone who chooses Billpay as a payment method at a retailer will first be checked for their identity, i.e. they must provide their name, address and other data. The credit check is then carried out.

If both are rated positively, the order will be processed. As with PayPal, Billpay first pays the amount to the retailer. You then have between 20 and 30 days to settle the Billpay bill. When it comes to data security, the company is in no way inferior to its two more popular role models.

    Other providers/methods

Buy and pay on account as a new customer

In principle, it is actually possible with almost all large online retailers to pay on account both as a regular customer and as a new customer. Companies like OTTO or Amazon are no exception. The fact that you are ordering as a new customer has no influence on whether you can purchase on account or not. But what is the reason why many consumers are still unable to pay on account when they place their first order in some online shops?

It's – again – the credit check. Anyone who has already ordered from a retailer online on account has already passed the test and can therefore buy from this retailer, provided there is no dramatic change in the customer's Schufa score. Whenever a new customer places an order for the first time, an online retailer always checks their creditworthiness first. If the check is negative, you as a new customer cannot pay on account. This happens above all if you have already not paid on time at other shops or have even received reminders.

Smaller online retailers are often an exception. There they often only allow existing customers to purchase on account, since no credit check is carried out. However, you often gain the trust of the shop providers by paying the first invoice on time. In most cases, you can therefore buy on account from the second order.

FAQ: Important questions answered briefly and compactly

Although we already deal with all important questions on the subject in our guide, some questions only scratch the surface of the topic or simply did not find a place there. That's why we designed this FAQ section, in which we give short and compact answers to your most important questions.

Purchase on account vs. installment purchase: What are the differences?

In addition to purchase on account, many online retailers also offer you the option of installment purchases, which is very popular with many citizens. In this way, you can pay the bill in several small monthly amounts and do not have to pay the entire amount in one go. Of course, almost all providers charge interest for this payment method, but more on that later.

First of all, these two methods have a few things in common: there is no prepayment and the retention of title applies until full payment has been made. Nevertheless, there are also a number of differences, which we would like to show you using the following table.

    Purchase on invoice hire purchase
The purchase price is due in one amount and must be paid within a specified period. The purchase price is divided into several agreed monthly installments.
There are no additional costs if no payment break has been agreed. Interest costs are incurred, which can often be in the double-digit range. 0% financing is an exception.
Ownership is transferred immediately after receipt of the invoice amount. The retention of title applies until the last installment has been received.

Is purchasing on account suitable for returns?

In contrast to advance payments, purchasing returns on account is very practical and virtually stress-free. Of course, you have your statutory right of withdrawal and can exercise it at any time. So if the order you ordered is defective or not what you wanted, you can easily return it. Only the shipping costs are not always covered by every dealer, but a large part of them are. Even if not, there is still the option of buyer protection, something like PayPal offers you.

In conclusion, we can say: Because you do not pay in advance, enjoy a right of withdrawal and rarely have to pay the shipping costs, purchasing on account is the preferred method for returns in online shopping.

Purchase on account rejected: what now?

There are numerous reasons why an online shop denies you the option of purchasing on account. These include, among other things:

You are then faced with the question: what now? You always have the option of paying in advance, where you have to pay the amount in advance. If the purchase is very urgent, but there is a lack of financial resources at the moment, a small loan with low interest rates can help. Depending on the provider, different requirements apply when it comes to the Schufa query.
