Streaming services such as Netflix not only cater to series and film fans, but also to those with an affinity for fashion. Productions such as "Emily in Paris", "Halston" or "The Crown" are regarded as a veritable fund of fashion highlights. Individual accessories or looks often result in sales hype. The most recent example is the South Korean thriller series "Squid Game", in which indebted people have to take part in deadly games - not a trace of glossy optics and designer clothes.

But since its launch in September, sales of the cast's footwear have gone through the roof. Although the brand logo is not clearly identified in the series, the models are unmistakably classic Vans slip-on shoes.

Google: Searches for “triple white” colorway up 7800 percent

According to UK sneaker platform The Sole Supplier, data from Google Trends showed that searches for the “ Triple White" color scheme increased by 7800 percent. After all, the shoes are available for less than 100 euros, while the luxury label Prada will cost you 640 euros with an almost identical model.

The Vans model is nothing new: the slip-on version was created back in 1977. The brand was the first manufacturer ever to develop a sports shoe specifically for skateboarding. To this day it is one of the classics among white sneakers.

  • Hype about Netflix series "Squid Game"

But why is it so popular these days? Above all, the functionality in winter should not be overestimated. It is neither lined nor is the color white the right choice given the changeable weather conditions in Germany. Perhaps a look at color psychology will provide a reason: white is associated with qualities such as new beginnings, purity, innocence and perfection.

Speaking of psychology, the meaning of clothing is known to be linked to cultural phenomena as well as specific functions. For example, sportswear makes people look healthier and wearing sports shoes is associated with physical activity.

In the "Squid Game" series, all game participants wear the same teal tracksuits, white t-shirts and white sneakers. Is it that sense of community, belonging to a group, or needing to be equal with others and not stand out that rubs off on us when we all wear white Vans? What is certain is that wearing classic slip-ons is anything but individual.

Not only the shoes of the fighters, but also the overalls of the villains from the series are a bestseller. After the red body suits were a hit at the annual Halloween spectacle, we'll keep an eye on how the 2021/2022 carnival season will take stock. The "Dangerous Guard Costume" is currently on sale for 36.96 euros - cheaper than the white slip-on, more functional in winter and who knows: maybe next year red body suits will also be in fashion outside of costume parties.

The days of white Vans are numbered: For 2022, color mixes and pastel tones are popular for the color palette of sports shoes. It was not inspired by a current film or series – and that's a good thing.
