Run: men get sick - what they can learn from women

The difference seems small, but it is important to us.You who run, I am, the author of this article, science editor and leisure runner.I have no idea how quickly I run a kilometer. Why?Sport is all about feeling good and my health. This is typical woman.

He who runs is Mike Kleiß, columnist and author. His personal marathon best time is less than three hours.Mike has about 100 pairs of running shoes at home.He says that for him it is also about testing limits. This is typical man.

Because of these small differences, our podcast is called "it is running. He runs".Like us, many are: women and men do sports in very different ways.Especially when running you can see it clearly. So I experienced it on a slope on the banks of Hamburg some time ago.Five kilometers I was relaxed along the edge of the harbor.Think little.Just let yourself go.Now just up here, and then I'm at home.A few meters in front of me I see two men, in his mid -forty.Tight running pants, top padded shoes, neon yellow functional shirts. Both have high -red heads and are out of breath. You can no longer run, only stroll and strike like Darth Vader.

Hardly that I have to pre -run a cozy step on them, I hear the one murmur: "Hey, we don't let a woman overtake ourselves."Already pant off and pass by.Eye, they sprint 100 meters further to a pedestrian traffic light. With now bright red heads, they support themselves panting at the post."Won", one can still japs. And hope that the traffic lights don't show green too quickly.

Many train too much and too hard - you will find the right measure for yourself

In spring, men of the orthopedic surgeon are the best customers

For many men, life is a competition. They are on the hunt for best times, win, want to tear down borders. It is rare healthy.Too often whistles are whistled on signals that the body sends, until the joints grind and squeak.Regeneration is a foreign word for many. It's about fame and honor- and hero stories with which men can show off in front of colleagues at the next video meeting. My marathon, my triathlon, my time.

It is no surprise that men are mostly those who die the sudden cardiac death in the marathon. At the start of the running season, the orthopedic surgeon is the best customers. With a shin pain, inflamed soles and overloaded muscles, they populate the waiting room-full of hope for immediate healing. An orthopedist that I recently spoke to says: "When the first days the sun is shining, I only treat men."

Women mainly do sports because we want to feel comfortable, says the statistics.Because we want to do something for ourselves and serious pounds are annoying.Yoga, gymnastics or Pilates are popular. If we put on the sneakers, we rarely want to break records.Minimal requirements and borderline experiences are rather irrelevant. We want to have fun, maybe chat with your best friend a bit.But in any case, don't rush like senses in a row. That's why we take it easy. For this we are then rewarded with less injuries due to overload and fatigue.

Why is that?On ancient genes? In the upbringing? In our environment? In the first episode of our podcast we go to search for traces.Talking about our experiences and discussing how scientists look at the sexes and their respective running habits.Mike Kleiß admits that his doctor has already advised him to tackle it more moderately. And I can use it to have no running injury yet.

Laufen: Männer machen sich krank – was sie von Frauen lernen können

New research skills sport actually makes you smart - so movement helps our head

Sure: women also make mistakes!True, we are not the perfect athletes either.Above all, however, I have learned that from many conversations with sports doctors over the years because we often take it easy.

Just like the patient of a Hamburg doctor who came into his consultation for a training plan. When she returned to control six weeks later, she complained that she had made no progress. The doctor asked. She was running on the Alster three times a week. But she never got far.He asked, "Why not?"She replied: "Because my heart always started beating and I was sweating, I stopped."Whenever it became exhausting, she stopped. The doctor's pragmatic solution: he accompanied her for training and explained that an increased pulse and a little sweat were quite normal.

Finding the right measure is a little art, for men and for women alike. Many fail because of it, we don't want to make any secret of it.That is why we deal intensively with this question in our podcast. My co-moderator Mike Kleiß learned it in a hard way. When he thought he could get back into training with an operated knee again. And I, when I was in the middle of my first run, in the middle of Hamburg - and I realized how much I was in truth. We said today: the two genders can learn a lot from each other.

The art of dosage is particularly important when running

My co-runner Mike switched back a gear. And I didn't give up.But set me small goals. At some point it went better. Not the next day, but in the next few weeks. Then I came home and said to my husband: "It was great, luckily I started."Five from two kilometers, then seven. It was less and less strictly stricting me.Every time I felt more comfortable, healthier too.The healing power of the movement is documented by numerous studies. The American doctor James O’Keefe once said to me in an interview: "If movement were a medication, it would be worth a wealth."

To date, physical activity is the only known means that slows down ages.It also prevents numerous diseases such as heart attack, diabetes, depression and high blood pressure, and it strengthens the immune system.Correctly dosed even without any side effects.

So it's worth running out.Just now.The best pace for women and men is easy to find.In order to have the greatest health effect, nobody has to run 15 kilometers every day or storm up mountains. It's not about panting an excessive fitness ideal afterwards.A moderate pace is already enough. The simple equation that only a lot of sport also means more health no longer applies.Numerous studies showed the effectiveness of movement even in surprisingly small cans. For example, researchers from the Cooper Institute in Dallas found that even runners who train only slowly and sporadically live on average up to three years longer than their inactive contemporaries.Even smokers and overweight people benefit.

Sport and nutrition how you get fit and slim with the right nutrition - without energy bars and power drinks

Sport already works in small portions

We have made the mistake too long to take the fun for people because we have suggested that they have to train a lot and hard to stay healthy.Running is our life elixir.Only when it gives joy, I serve my sports shoes in the morning. My most important rule: running must not hurt, otherwise I will be on the road too quickly and give up.I have to feel good.If I can still talk smoothly while running, my pace is exactly right.

By the way: Each episode of the podcast takes an hour. This is intentional, because for a relaxed runway you need about as long.So you can hear us well on the go.
