Olaf Scholz: sweater and jeans in the government flyer - Merkel in comparison

Incidentally, the casual clothing on board the government flyer was unusual.That has a tradition and makes sense.If the government members weren't hanging their jacketts on long -haul flights on a bracket, they would be crumpled on the red carpet of the host country.This in turn would also be fabric for excitement online.Merkel always wore a cardigan on these long flights.I never saw them in jeans.And they were not allowed to photograph them with the jacket, which - typical Merkel - was practical, but by no means an eye -catcher.

Incidentally, we journalists as well as the entourage and the security of government members hold it the same way.On the plane we free ourselves from our jackets, also wear sweaters or cardigan.Exposing shoes is also allowed on a long distance.Before landing, the business outfit is then pulled out of the luggage compartments.

Back to Scholz: The fact that the Chancellor only produced so many headlines with his sweater before his landing in Washington was also due to the model he was wearing.It was at least one number too big, which then didn't look like a convenient practical travel clothing, but look like a sloppy look.

Then the question is already allowed: is it helpful if something seems too big for the Chancellor at all as a number?He needs to know himself.In any case, he entered the red carpet for arrival in Washington with a well -fitting dark suit.So a happy ending in terms of clothing.

The fact that the photos of Scholz were taken has to do with slightly changed customs when traveling the new Chancellor compared to Merkel.Background talks on flights with Merkel basically took place in a small meeting room in the government plane.We always had to stack a bit there.The four of them were sitting on a series of triple and on the small table between the seats.Two or three colleagues mostly had to stand.

Merkel herself also accepted that she was sitting with us.In this small space, the law was considered to be an unwritten law and that the use of cell phones were not allowed.Block and pen had to be enough.Apart from a few exceptions, Merkel no longer took journalists with him in Corona times.For the sake of completeness, it should be mentioned again at this point that the publishers and transmitters pay for the flights - they do not go to taxpayer costs.

Scholz has significantly more journalists travel, which is gratifying because it promotes the diversity of press.However, the meeting room is really too small for so many people.So the Chancellor comes back to the plane with a microphone to letters to the media.Unlike Merkel, who always passed the microphone around for questions, Scholz alone holds on to it.

There are also differences in terms of content: Merkel never dug state secrets, but after the conversations with it you were always smarter.It mostly leafed a global political analysis.You then knew in the truest sense of the word where the journey was going.

Now I have to admit that I only started accompanying her in the second half of Merkel's reign.The ability to draw from the full in the analyzes will not have been so pronounced at the beginning of their term.So I would like to give Scholz a little bit more grace period before I complain that he really answers questions neither with ongoing cameras nor in the background.There is definitely air up.
