The Asics Novablast 2 in review | RUNNER'S WORLD

In this article:

This summer, Asics presented a very promising training shoe with the Novablast 2: The Novablast 2 is a model for runners who like it fast and comfortable at the same time. The test shows the changes compared to the already very popular predecessor model. The platinum edition in elegant white or light gray with glittering elements now provides a little sparkle in the winter time (the women's version is shown above, the men's model below). The men's version also comes in new, muted colors with a street-style aesthetic.

A whole new Asics running experience

The first Asics Novablast was introduced last year - and all descriptions are unnecessary with the information that it was sold out in many places in a short time. The Novablast was great right away! The Novablast was also an enrichment and addition to the richly stocked range of models on the Asics shelf. The recipe for success was offered by the midsole: softly cushioned, very reactive and light at the same time. That hasn't changed with the Novablast 2 either: the Flytefoam Blast midsole foam has stayed. 30 millimeters of this are embedded in the heel area and 22 millimeters in the forefoot (women's version: 29-11 millimeters).

Lots of reactivity and surprisingly light

However, exactly the two points that were also criticized in the RUNNER'S WORLD test have been improved: The drop in the new version has become slightly smaller, now it is 8 millimeters (previously 10). And the stability in the rolling process is slightly increased, especially in the heel area - this is ensured by a reinforced internal heel counter construction. Another noticeable change concerns the upper, a double-layered mesh material that offers a little more space in the toe area. At the same time, the fit in the midfoot area is still tight - typical Asics comfort. Contrary to what the voluminous midsole might convey, the shoe is extremely light. It weighs just 275 grams (men's US size 9), or 225 grams in the women's version. There are few comparable running shoes that offer so much cushioning comfort at such a low weight. On top of that, the sole characteristics support a dynamic running style, because they are very flexible and easy to torsion.

More stability through the sole construction

But it's the running impression that makes the shoe so outstanding: "The midsole is incredibly springy," reports an enthusiastic test runner. The Novablast 2 has been optimized very successfully - a few millimeters change in the midsole give the new version even more forward thrust and at the same time slightly increased stability, according to our RUNNER'S WORLD test. The shoe is now even more suitable for forefoot or midfoot strikes, as the forefoot area is slightly raised. The imprint benefits from the slight changes, the Novablast 2 invites you to train at a leisurely and very brisk pace in equal measure. "Careful optimization of a great training shoe," wrote one test runner.

There are only limitations in the recommendations for heavier runners with biomechanical problems who are looking for a more stable training shoe. The usage profile of the Novablast 2 is ideal for fast training pace or even for street competition. The high speed suitability is not bought with excessive hardness, on the contrary: "The soft cushioning surprised me a bit at first, and I found it taking some getting used to on the first few meters," reports a test runner after the first test run. "But as the pace increased, I began to appreciate the high energy return and comfort provided by the midsole's Flytefoam Blast."

The outsole matches the running characteristics and is very well adapted to hard surfaces such as asphalt, where it offers good grip and a very good adhesion to the footprint. The upper also harmonises wonderfully with the sole: it is very well ventilated, and your feet don't get too hot even under heavy loads. The lacing and the good padded tongue hold the shoe very well.

Conclusion: Dynamism and comfort are guaranteed

The Novablast 2 ranks in the first row of the currently very popular training shoes, which shine equally through cushioning, reactivity and agile running. Models such as the Nike Pegasus 38, Hoka OneOne Mach 4 or the New Balance 1080 v11 are comparable to the Novablast 2 in terms of dynamics, comfort and running feel. The Asics Novablast 2 offers the typical Asics fit - this is a promising mix.
