Chemical smell? Why you should always smell new shoes

Anyone who buys shoes pays particular attention to two criteria: appearance and comfort. Above all, the new shoes have to be pretty, match the outfit and ideally also fit well. Anyone who neglects the latter will be punished with foot pain.
However, most women have so far left out a third criterion – it is the most important thing for our health.
Have you ever smelled new sandals and co.? No? Then you should do it from now on. Admittedly, no one likes to smell shoes, but in the store they are at least unworn. Should they still stink – away with it. Because an unpleasant smell could be an indication of carcinogenic substances.
Carcinogenic substances in flip flops & Co.
ÖKO-Test discovered this connection in the course of summer shoe tests. Among other things, flip flops, plastic clogs and bathing shoes were examined. Almost half of the 25 products failed the test. Because a pollutant analysis in the laboratory showed that the shoes were sometimes heavily loaded.
Do the shoes smell chemical? Keep distance!
At that time, mercury, the plasticizer diethylhexylphthalate (DEHP), the dye aniline and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) could be detected in the shoes. The substances are all considered hazardous to health.
Since the purpose of summer shoes is to wear them barefoot, you are in constant skin contact with the pollutants. Not a nice idea!
Now not everyone has a pollutant laboratory in the house and certainly not in their handbag when buying shoes. Therefore, ÖKO-Test recommends the quick test for on the go: If the said PAHs have been processed in the shoes, you can often smell it. The shoes have an unpleasant chemical smell.
So, no false shame when buying shoes! If summer shoes such as flip flops and the like smell unpleasant, it is better to leave them on the shelf. If someone looks at you crookedly while sniffing, you simply pass the trick on to the person. She will thank you.
