In patent leather boots and boxer shorts he gives the devil a lap dance. Shortly afterwards he breaks his neck - and puts his horns on himself. This is how rapper Lil Nas X ends the music video for his new track "Montero (Call Me By Your Name)". Never before in the history of US hip-hop has a rapper presented his own homosexuality with such self-confidence and relish. No wonder the video was streamed more than 40 million times in just a few days.

  1. Rapper Lil Nas X has come out as gay

This is an important sign, precisely because "Old Town Road" is the most successful rap song of all time.

Lil Nas X came out two years ago following the tremendous success of his debut hit "Old Town Road". Actually, he had vowed never to make his own sexuality public. Lil Nas X revealed this in an emotional letter to his 14-year-old self. It says: "I know we swore to take the secret to the grave, but it will open many doors for other queer people." Even if it will upset many, it is important so that no one else will in the future tells people who to be. This statement in combination with his queer hip-hop performance (including Teufel lap dance) would probably have been enough for a revolutionary release. But Lil Nas X upped the ante.

Because on the occasion of the new track, the rapper launched sneakers together with the New York artist collective MSCHF Product Studio. And not just any sneakers, but: "Satan Shoes". These are custom-made Nike Air Max 97 sneakers with a pentagram pendant, an inverted cross, and a sole that's said to have red ink in it, and - Warning! - a drop of human blood. "We love to make sacrifices for our art," explained a spokesman for the collective (the blood is said to be from the artists themselves).

Also, the edition is limited to 666 pieces and retails for $1018 a pair. The price is a reference to a Bible passage that is also engraved on the outside of the sneaker: "Luke 10:18". Unsurprisingly, the Gospel of Luke is about the devil: "He said to them, 'I saw Satan fall from heaven like lightning.' According to media reports, the shoes sold out in less than a minute.

The big problem with the PR campaign: The sporting goods manufacturer Nike has absolutely nothing to do with it - and also doesn't think it's good at all. In a statement to the news channel CNN, the company explained that the artist collective had violated the trademark rights: "Nike did not design or market these shoes and does not endorse them either." The consequence: Nike sued the artist collective MSCHF. Because the sale of the "Satan Shoes" harmed the reputation of the company. Conservative Christian Americans had previously called for a Nike boycott on social media. Including former NBA player Nick Young. TV Pastor Mark Burns also tweeted about the Satan sneakers and music video: "This is vicious and heretical. I pray that Christians will rise up against it. ”Others saw the rapper's action calmly – or celebrated him for it:

Lil Nas X himself posted a video on YouTube entitled, "Lil Nas X Apologizes For Satan Shoes." But what he doesn't do in it: apologize for the Satan shoes. Even before he starts to make a supposed apology, the video jumps to the devilish lap dance scene from "Montero (Call Me By Your Name)".

Incidentally, it is interesting that MSCHF launched a counterpart to the Satan sneaker in autumn 2019. Also an "Air Max" model, made with a crucifix made of steel and "holy water" in the sole: the "Jesus Shoes". At the time, there was no lawsuit from Nike.

Get rid of skinny jeans!

How could a trend that turns men's legs into pressed sausages last so long?

Is millennial fashion really out?

Generation Z just doesn't understand how people can wear skinny jeans and side parting. The older ones don't let that sit on them.

Gucci is now selling grass-stained trousers

The new "eco washed denim" only costs a mere 650 euros and is the logical further development of the holey jeans.
