  • 4 bicycle light sets in the test: in a nutshell

StVZO-compliant bicycle lights cannot be found cheaper online than the sets in the test, which cost between €9.99 and around €25. Even small (non-bike-legal) turn signals often cost more than the head and tail light packages we've tested. Can this go well?

The simple answer is: "yes, quite well in fact". In any case, just as good as some models that cost more like 50 euros. On the brightest level, the headlights are also suitable for road cycling at a leisurely winter training pace. All cheap bicycle light sets achieved a test light duration of at least 3 hours at maximum output - more than specified. The light sets at a glance:

Slide show: 4 bicycle light sets up to 30 euros in the test: Aldi vs. Amazon vs. Lidl vs. Sigma! Start slide show » # We procured four light sets with StVZO from €10.00 to €27 for the test.# Lidl Crivit light set - for €19.99 with sensor, rear light with brake light and rubber strap.# Sigma Aura 35 USB - for around 27 .00 € with 35 lux, rubber strap and rear light.# Deilin at Amazon - for around 26 € headlight with 70 lux, sensor, clamp holder and rear light.# Aldi Bikemate - for around 10.00 € headlight with 70 lux, sensor, Clamp holder and rear light with brake light.

There were no flops at all. The inexpensive 10-euro Aldi light set even delivers the second-best overall performance. Unfortunately, it is only seasonally available promotional items. Surprising: The test winner was the Sigma Aura 35 USB light set with nugget rear light. Although the bicycle headlight only has an output of 35 lux on paper, it emits more light than the other light sets with an official 70 lux light output. In addition, the Sigma light set is the easiest to use. Differences result from the quality of the photo on the one hand and also from the mounting options - here it is worth reading the test more closely.

    test procedure

The light sets were purchased commercially. There was a plus point for recycled and recyclable cardboard packaging. We weighed the LED headlights and fully charged and discharged them once in preparation. After charging it again, we let it shine on the brightest level at outside temperature (12 degrees). We captured the end of the lighting time using a time-lapse recording in 5-minute increments.

We tested the assembly on various handlebars (31.8 mm diameter, flat aero handlebars) and evaluated the universal suitability, the ease of attachment and the grip on the handlebars while riding. The taillights were attached to a round 27.2mm diameter seatpost and a narrower seatstay.

Light range and photo test set-up to fold out # The path in the light of a bright helmet lamp - The split strip is approx. 3 m wide, the first tea light is at 1 m in front of the front wheel, at 30 m there is a large doll on the right edge, at 40 m a bag with reflectors, the container is 50 m away. # Cheap bulbs or a real alternative? - For the ride test, we "screwed" the four bicycle light sets together to the handlebars and switched them on individually on the way.# Determining the light duration - we let the headlights burn at the brightest level until the end and recorded them at intervals of 5 minutes.# Charge level indicator - How well the lights provide information about the progress of the charge was included in the evaluation. # Environmentally friendly? - There was a plus point for pure cardboard packaging, such as that used by Lidl.# Energy-conscious? - There was a minus point for non-rechargeable batteries (only on the Aldi rear light).

In order to assess the light quality, we took photographs with always identical camera settings from the perspective on the handlebars and set them to a distance of 50 m. Once the brightest and once the weakest level was used. We photographed the rear lights from a distance of 40 m.

On paper, the cheap bicycle light sets with StVZO differ significantly. In terms of price, the Aldi Bikemate, which we have already tested individually under a different name, is an outlier at 9.99 euros. For the money, it's reported to offer the same 70 lux light output as light sets from Deilin (bought from Amazon) and Lidl brand Crivit - the latter set is available year-round, by the way. The set from Sigma Sport, on the other hand, only promises 35 lux. What looks like "funzel" on paper is different in practice. With the exception of the Aldi light set, all of them are around 20 euros. All are also approved according to StVZO, which is mandatory for Germany. You can recognize them by the K sign with a wavy line and a number.

Another difference concerns the LED rear lights: the light sets from Aldi and Lidl offer an integrated brake light function. They shine brighter when decelerating, which is detected via an integrated sensor, not via the brakes. Minus point for the Aldi rear light: It is the only one that is not rechargeable, but uses AAA batteries.

    Test Photographs

    Tip: click = enlarge

    # Sigma Aura 35 USB headlamp at full power - beautifully even, long-range and front wide light pattern, giving no indication that on paper the headlamp is only half the performance of the others.# Deilin headlamp from Amazon at full power - striking is the cross shape of the photograph. Long illumination, but not so convincing in practice because the light is not so even.# Aldi Bikemate light image at the brightest level - even cone, which is also slightly wider than with Deilin and Crivit and also appears brighter, second-best light output in the test .# Lidl Crivit LED bicycle headlights at the highest level - the longest light strip in the test, but also the narrowest - making it well suited for road cycling. The very homogeneous illumination is also a plus.# The rear lights from Lidl (picture) and Aldi...# ...have a brake light function and shine brighter with more LEDs when decelerating.

The light output of the 4 inexpensive StVZO headlights in the test has a few surprises in store. We examined how well you can see obstacles and the condition of the path in the light of the headlights on a 50 m long section of road in a parking lot. Result: Although all four headlights achieve similar lighting ranges, they differ in how well objects are visible in the driving line or the edge is illuminated. Above all, an even light image without bright spots makes it easier for the eye to work in the dark. This is what we noticed:

Radiation from bicycle rear lights is also on a similar level. The Sigma Nugget LED rear light, which shines noticeably brighter than the other candidates from Lidl, Amazon and Aldi, stands out positively. Deilin and Sigma lights are best seen from the side.

    assembly and operation

What good is the best bike light if you can't mount it safely and easily on your own bike? There is a fundamental difference between the headlights in the test.

    Rubber strap: Lidl and Sigma

Lidl Crivit and Sigma Aura 35 are held in place by a flexible rubber strap. Advantage: They are attached in a flash, which is particularly important when using them on several bicycles. In addition, the strap allows a variety of mounting positions and handlebar shapes. But: Only the Sigma Aura bike light is reasonably adjustable and fits flat aero handlebars. Minus point at Lidl: The rubber band does not fix the headlight permanently on jogging tracks because of the smaller contact surface.

    # Practical - to adjust the light cone, you can easily open and close the quick-release fastener.# Rubber strap - flexible, but cumbersome with Crivit and not 100% secure in assembly.# The same thing with the rear lights - the rubber is flexible and stays in place Fall from Sigma also safe.# The clamp at Aldi - a bit too big for typical 27.2 mm supports and not separately angle adjustable.

    Clamp: Aldi and Deilin

The other mounting option is a round clamp. Disadvantage: Rubber inserts are required to adapt to different handlebar diameters, which are easy to lose. At Deilin there was no use for 31.8 mm, but the grip on the handlebars was still good. In general, the clamps fix the headlight better, which is their biggest advantage. We liked the Aldi solution better here.

    taillights

The basic distinction between rubber and plastic clamps also applies to the rear lights of the bicycle light sets. The inflexible clamp of the Aldi Bikemate did not fare so well here. Even with the included rubber spacer, it could only just be fixed to the round seat post. The Crivit rear light mount is the most flexible. It also fits on a thin strut. Since the headlight is also very flexible in assembly, the set is the tip for use on several bikes. There were minus points for Deilin, because here plastic is stretched directly onto the wheel, which does not hold well.

    Charging and burn time

How long our 4 cheap bicycle lights glowed in the test does not differ significantly. The Sigma Aura 35 USB spotlight made important points for the overall victory here: With a burn time of 280 minutes, it is the most enduring. The Crivit bike light illuminates the road for the shortest time, bringing up the rear with 240 minutes.

It is also important that the end of the battery power is displayed in good time. All models play it safe here. They warn you at least 40 minutes before they go out, easily recognizable by a flashing or different color of the LED status display. For us, “red alert” started unnecessarily early at Sigma. After the red glow of the LED, the headlight ran for a whopping 2 hours.

All bicycle lights can be charged via USB C or Micro USB, whereby the Sigma charging connections are best covered. The USB C connection with the larger plug at Aldi and Lidl is also a bit more robust. But only Aldi uses it consistently for a quick charge function. A plus for the discounter spotlight!

    # The end of the battery life should be displayed in good time - this is the case with all headlights - with Sigma even a little too early.

    processing

All headlights and taillights look at least well made. Only the Deilin product falls a bit short with a thin and hard looking case and injection molded edges. On paper, however, it offers the best protection against water (IPX5). All inexpensive StVZO lights in the test are protected against splashing water and coarse dirt. A minus point for them is the lateral adjustment of the Deilin, which is not resistant to shaking. Sigma and Aldi headlights cannot be swiveled at all.

Sigma Aura 35 USB + Sigma Nugget

    # Tip-test-winner-light-sets-30-euro

The Sigma Aura 35 USB set with Nugget II rear light emerged as the test winner in our comparison of 4 inexpensive bicycle light sets. The fact that it can beat the somewhat cheaper discounter sets is mainly due to the better light image of the headlight and rear light, as well as the simplest handling and the longest burn time. It can be a little more expensive for that.

The Aldi Bikemate bicycle light set is an unbeatable offer at a price of €9.99. The photo is almost on par with the other cheap models, the handling is okay and the load is even better. Nothing for unusual handlebar shapes. Bottom line: clear price-performance tip.

    Lidl Crivit Bike Light Set

    # The small reflector creates a very even light pattern.

The Lidl Crivit light in the test convinces with a particularly even, long and narrow light pattern - a good choice for racing bikes. Probably not for gravel bikes, because the headlight is not 100% vibration-proof. An advantage is the flexible attachment of the front light as well as the rear light. Sets that look similar are available under other names for a lot more money. All in all, a very good price-performance ratio.

Deilin bike light set from Amazon

    # Deilin at Amazon - for around 26 € headlight with 70 lux, sensor, clamp holder and rear light.

The Deilin bicycle light set from the huge range of the online trade Amazon cannot distinguish itself from the lights of the discounters and the bicycle specialist Sigma in any discipline. It does not have any serious weaknesses, so that with the versatile rear light it is a good alternative for joggers and multi-sports enthusiasts, for example if you are an Amazon Prime customer.

Test conclusion: How good are cheap bicycle light sets?

The performance of the inexpensive bicycle light sets in the test is sufficient for many occasions: to be seen anyway, for better visibility on unlit paths and racing cycling at training speed, even if you are prepared to brake on the descent if in doubt. They are all bargains, since the light output does not differ significantly from sets that are sometimes twice as expensive. If you want a lot more, you have to spend a lot more and get a headlight in the 100 euro range. None of them have any real weaknesses. The diffuse light pattern speaks against the Deilin spotlight from Amazon. The slightly poorer grip speaks against the Crivit light set from Lidl - but in turn the flexible assembly. The price-performance tip par excellence is the Aldi light set, which is not always available. You get the best overall performance and, above all, the best light image with the Sigma Sport Aura 35 USB. A purchase decision could also be where you can mount the rear light and headlight, which we noted in the individual tests.

    # Lots of light, little shadow - all cheap headlights are really useful.
